Alight Motion XML Import Error? How to Fix It (2026 Guide)

Getting an error when you try to import an XML file into Alight Motion — or the import goes through but the project looks empty or broken? XML files are a popular way to share Alight Motion presets and projects, but they’re fragile: one wrong detail and the whole import fails. This guide explains what XML files are, why imports fail, and how to narrow down the cause step by step. Part of our Alight Motion troubleshooting hub.

What Is an Alight Motion XML File?

An XML file is a plain-text file that describes a project — its layers, effects, timing, and settings — in a structured format Alight Motion can read. Think of it as a recipe rather than a finished video: the XML tells the app how to rebuild the project, but it doesn’t always contain the actual ingredients (images, videos, fonts). This matters because an XML that imports “successfully” can still look wrong if something it references is missing.

Why XML Imports Fail: The Likely Causes

There is no single universal cause. These are the most common ones, roughly ordered from most to least likely.

1. Wrong file type

Make sure the file is actually an XML file (.xml extension) and not a renamed archive, a link file, or a different preset format. Files shared online are sometimes mislabeled, and Alight Motion can’t import what it can’t parse.

2. Incomplete or broken download

A download that was interrupted — common on mobile data or when a browser tab closes early — leaves you with a truncated file. The app then fails partway through reading it. Re-download the file over a stable connection and confirm the download fully completes first.

3. Malformed or damaged file

XML is strict about structure: a missing bracket or a badly edited line can make the whole file unreadable. This happens when files are edited by hand, converted by third-party tools, or corrupted in transit. If you have a way to get a fresh copy from the source, do that before trying to repair anything yourself.

4. Incompatible preset or app version

Presets created in a newer version of Alight Motion can use features your installed version doesn’t understand, and vice versa. If the XML came with version notes, check them; otherwise, updating Alight Motion to the latest version is a reasonable step — it can only expand what your app can read.

5. Missing linked media

Remember the recipe analogy: if the XML references images, videos, or fonts that aren’t on your phone, the project may import with blank layers or missing text. Check whether the preset was supposed to come with media files, and place them where the project expects them before importing.

6. Wrong import method

XML files usually need to be imported through the app’s own import flow (for example, via the project import option) rather than simply tapped in a file manager. If you’re opening the file directly and getting an error, try importing it from inside Alight Motion instead. Our Alight Motion presets guide walks through the correct import steps.

7. File access and permissions

If the XML sits in a restricted folder, is still syncing from cloud storage, or the app lacks storage permission, the import can fail even though the file itself is fine. Move the file to your main internal storage (e.g., the Downloads folder), make sure any cloud sync has finished, and confirm Alight Motion has the storage access it needs.

8. Unsupported content inside the file

Some shared XML files reference effects, fonts, or features tied to specific app versions or paid features. If everything else checks out, the file may simply contain something your setup can’t reproduce — in which case no amount of retrying will fix it, and you need a different preset.

Troubleshooting Sequence

Work through these in order; stop as soon as the import succeeds.

  1. Verify the file. Confirm it’s a genuine .xml file with a sensible file size (a few KB is normal for a simple preset; 0 bytes means a failed download).
  2. Re-download it. Get a fresh copy over stable Wi-Fi and don’t interrupt the download.
  3. Move it to internal storage. Put the file in Downloads, fully synced, not inside a cloud-only folder.
  4. Use the in-app import flow. Import from inside Alight Motion per the preset import instructions, not by tapping the file.
  5. Update Alight Motion. A newer app version reads more preset formats.
  6. Check for missing media. If the project imports but looks empty, find and add the referenced images, videos, or fonts.
  7. Get another copy. If the file itself is damaged or uses unsupported content, ask the source for a fresh or compatible version.

Preventing XML Import Problems

  • Download preset files over stable Wi-Fi and let downloads finish completely.
  • Keep the XML together with any media files it needs — don’t separate them.
  • Don’t hand-edit XML files unless you know the format; one typo breaks the file.
  • Keep Alight Motion updated so it can read presets made in newer versions.
  • When sharing presets yourself, test the import on a second device before distributing the file.

Why does my XML preset import but look empty or broken?

The XML imported, but media it references (images, videos, fonts) may be missing from your phone. Find the media files the preset needs, add them to your device, and re-import the XML.
